Usher Pays Tribute To Aaron Spears, His Longtime Friend And Drummer

Aaron Spears, esteemed drummer best known for working with Usher, Ariana Grande, Justin Bieber, and more, died recently at the age of 47. The tragic news was confirmed by his wife, Jessica, and their son, August, on Monday (Oct. 30). His cause of death is unknown.

“It is with a heavy heart and overwhelming sadness that I share the news of the passing of my beloved husband, Aaron Spears,” she wrote in an Instagram post.

“Aaron was not only an incredibly accomplished drummer, admired by many for his unparalleled talent and passion for music, but he was also a devoted father to our precious son, August. His love, guidance, and warmth were the pillars of our family, and his absence leaves a void that words cannot describe. We were blessed to have him in our lives, and his legacy will live on through the beautiful rhythms he created and the love he shared with us […] Please remember Aaron for the incredible person he was and the amazing music he brought into our world. At this time we ask for privacy as we work our way through this.”

Usher paid tribute to the late Grammy-nominated musician days later on Instagram.

“I cry, tears of joy, looking back at all of the memories we had together, I realize that you were the joy in every room you were in. We should not take life for granted or the people we love most as though they’re gonna be there forever,” wrote the 45-year-old.

He continued, “There are good people and then there are great people. Aaron Spears was great!! As a father, a son and in spirit.” Usher considered Spears to be “one of [his] heroes.”

The crooner noted, “He motivated me to do more, musically. Them drum rolls and that pocket was like none other. He had a heart that was pure…he wished people well and supported others. He was happy for others. He wanted greatness for people. He loved his family. He loved his friends. YEP!!! That boy good!!! As he would say…you did it A Speezy!! I love you and we who love you celebrate you.”

Ursher, then, urged readers to “be present.” Adding, “I speak a lot about being present, that thought has gone from a mental and spiritual concept to a physical action. Dap up or hug the people you love most more, the ones you love most…spend time with them more, talk to them more, cherish them more or if you can, see about them more. You never know when you may never meet again. Be present.”

Amid the news of Spears’ passing, Grande shared on her Instagram stories, “I can’t wrap my head around this. We were all so incredibly lucky to know Aaron. The absolute brightest light of a human being. Always the kindest, always smiling. I am so honored and thankful that our paths crossed and to have spent so much very special time together. Thank you for your utter brilliance, for our laughs, and for your kindness always. I will miss your hugs. You are so, so loved and will be so very missed.”

Avery Wilson, Muni Long, Vedo, PJ Morton, Tank, Kenyon Dixon, Questlove, Jimmy Jam, and more all offered their condolences in light of the tragic circumstances.
